General characteristics

Due to its population it ranks second among the cities in the province of Entre Ríos, being surpassed only by Paraná. According to the 2010 Census (INDEC), the population of Concordia is 149,450 inhabitants, with 51.7% women and 48.3% men.

The city of Concordia is located on the ancient alluvial terraces of the right bank of the Uruguay River. The area presents a topography gently undulating with no abrupt slopes, influenced by the longitudinal branches of the Cuchilla Grande. These branches, consisting of a higher elevation of the terrain, generally run in a Northwest-Southeast direction, helping to define the main watercourses of the region.

This relief determines the presence of 3 main streams, which cross the municipal district from West to East, collecting almost all the surface runoff of the Department until they flow entirely into the Uruguay River. These are: the Ayuí Grande stream, the Yuquerí Grande stream, and the Yuquerí Chico stream. The first one, with a length of about 27 km, originates north of the town of Los Charrúas and its basin covers approximately 28,000 hectares; the second is 54 km long and the last one is 37 km long. At the same time, 4 other smaller but highly relevant streams must be mentioned as they cross the most densely populated areas of the city; these are: the Concordia stream, the Manzores stream, the Camba Paso stream, and the Yuquerí Grande stream.

The Municipality extends from the south of Salto Grande to the Yuquerí Chico stream, with the Uruguay River as the eastern boundary and the farms marking a straight line parallel to the current National Route 14 as the western boundary.

The climate in the region corresponds to a transition zone between the two present in the province (subtropical without a dry season, characteristic of the Northeast region, and humid temperate Pampean in the rest), with an average annual temperature of 18.5ºC and average annual rainfall of approximately 1300 mm.

Regarding economic activities in the Department, sand deposits for construction, pebbles, and basalt are exploited; extensive agriculture has moderate development centered on rice and pasture cultivation, which are linked to the breeding and fattening of cattle. Citrus, blueberry, and forestry production have great development in the area, being the most prominent activities. Indeed, since 1943 Concordia has been recognized as the National Capital of Citrus.
