Following the declaration of the environmental emergency, the Municipality of Concordia began implementing a series of measures aimed at improving an essential public service in the city, such as waste collection.
The implementation of a mixed system allows for the planning of actions that respond to existing demand. An example of this is that neighborhoods that had the service 3 times a week now have it from Monday to Saturday, meaning it has doubled.
For the system to work, in addition to the role played by the Municipal State, there is the commitment of the residents, complying with schedules and disposing of waste correctly, aspects that contribute to the efficiency of the service.
In this regard, the Undersecretary of Environment Joaquín Gobetto pointed out that “the new system combines the areas that were granted under concession and the service carried out by the Municipality. This has allowed for a significant increase in frequency in some sectors, as there are neighborhoods where the truck's passage has doubled, from 3 days to the entire week, which represents a substantial advance in terms of urban hygiene, public health, and sanitation.”
“The implementation of this new scheme arises from a technical diagnosis that identified shortcomings in the previous system, such as limitations in the vehicle fleet, insufficient frequency, proliferation of micro-dumps and burning, to which must be added complaints from different sectors,” stated Gobetto, these being the essential points at the time of declaring the environmental emergency.
Like any new measure, it takes time to adapt, which is why it is important “that the community familiarizes itself, through official information channels, with the schedules and days on which collection is carried out in the neighborhood where they live. This is fundamental for the system to work and for us to avoid the formation of health risk hotspots,” noted Gobetto.
“We need residents to support this process with responsibility and patience, understanding that this is a structural change that requires joint commitment to achieve sustainable results over time,” concluded the Undersecretary of Environment.
