With the presence of Mayor Francisco Azcué and the vice president of the Malvinas War Veterans Center of Concordia, Héctor José Castro, the commemorative ceremony for the 44th anniversary of the sinking of the ARA “General Belgrano” cruiser was held this morning.
During the ceremony, Concordia residents Jorge Alberto Sendrós and Antonio Raúl González, who died during the conflict, and Ricardo Aníbal Rigoni, who died post-war, were remembered, in addition to paying tribute to the 323 crew members who gave their lives in defense of the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands.
Mayor Francisco Azcué recalled that “the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano is one of the most painful episodes of the Malvinas war and of Argentine history. That May 2, 1982, in the cold waters of the South Atlantic, the Belgrano was sailing with more than 1000 men on board when it was attacked. In a matter of minutes, amidst the storm, the extreme cold, and the uncertainty, 323 Argentines remained forever in the sea, giving their lives in the line of duty”.
For his part, the Deputy Officer in Charge of the Argentine Navy, Concordia Naval Delegation, Marine Infantry First Petty Officer Leonardo Esteban Girard, stressed that “we gather to pay tribute to the 323 heroes of the ARA General Belgrano cruiser, who gave their lives in the line of duty during the Malvinas war. Time has not erased the sacrifice of our sailors; their dedication remains alive in the heart of every Argentine who understands the true meaning of serving the Fatherland”.
The ceremony was attended by members of the Malvinas Veterans Center of Concordia; provincial legislators; council members; members of the Armed Forces and Security Forces; teachers and students of the Cabo Sendrós Secondary School No. 35; and patriotic, religious, and service institutions.
