(shì wài táo yuán)
This phrase designates a place of absolute peace, preserved from the outside world. Throughout history, these sites have received various names in different cultures; in China, it is known as Shangri-La.
The translation is "The Peach Blossom Spring" and is the title of a poetic story by the writer Tao Yuanming, who lived between the years 350 and 400 A.D. This expression refers to an idyllic refuge of peace, a hidden paradise preserved from the turmoil and worries of the outside world where people live in harmony with each other and with nature.
This story inspired great Chinese poets and painters, and has been recreated in paintings, music, theater, and cinema. The tale is the source of the Chinese expression (shì wài táo yuán) which symbolizes a utopian refuge, set apart from the everyday world.
