Through joint work between the Municipality of Concordia and the Government of Salto (Oriental Republic of Uruguay), the 1st Binational Suicide Prevention Seminar “Weaving networks, saving lives: a commitment without borders” was held.
The objective of the meeting, in which around 600 people participated, focused on providing tools for the early detection of warning signs, initial empathetic listening, and the immediate activation of referral and emergency circuits within the current binational regulatory framework.
Mayor Francisco Azcué highlighted the possibility for Concordia and Salto “to generate a space to listen to each other, learn, and address an issue that is extremely complex and should not be addressed only by the State, but rather we must do it together to develop public policies by listening to the community”.
Therefore, “I celebrate the participation of different institutions, sports entities, professionals, and residents, who have taken the initiative to train and learn in order to have more and new tools. The best thing we can do is put the issue on the table, know and recognize the situation that affects both us in Concordia and Salto, which is why I am grateful for this possibility to address the subject jointly”.
Carlos Silva Rattín, head of the Health, Hygiene and Environmental Management area of the Government of Salto, emphasized the similarities not only geographical or economic that both cities have but also from a social perspective “and this is an issue that affects us as a society in general, which is why it seems extremely important to us that we can share experiences and, of course, lay the foundations for a second meeting”.
Secretary of Health Diego Sauré maintained that “the only way to work on these issues is all together, strengthening what is already in force but also opening the possibility to new prevention proposals”.
Anabel Vergara, Director of Social Strengthening Policies, highlighted that we are facing a problem that has been affecting “one side and the other of the Uruguay River, which is why this initiative arises to share this first binational seminar in order to train ourselves and acquire new prevention tools”.
