The Municipality of Concordia, through the Undersecretariat of Environment, carries out the Surveillance and Monitoring Plan for water quality at authorized beaches and high-traffic areas, complementing the work performed by the Administrative Commission of the Uruguay River (CARU).
The program includes weekly monitoring with sampling to evaluate various microbiological parameters of pathogens and visual observation for algal blooms. In the event that the analyses yield values exceeding the limits established by Resolution (SMA) 84/07, the corresponding authorities are notified.
In addition, lifeguards and health personnel were trained to raise awareness on how to act in the presence of cyanobacteria from algal blooms, focusing on self-care.
For this purpose, signage with a traffic light system indicating preventive actions to be taken was provided, which is located at lifeguard stations and health flag posts.
Green color: (Surveillance level): The water can be used for recreational purposes as it looks clean with no blooms
Yellow color (Alert level 1): Means there is a risk when the water has the appearance of dispersed yerba or a bright green mass. It is recommended to wash with clean water after bathing.
Red color (Alert level 2): It is recommended not to bathe if a dark green or brownish pasty mass is observed in the water and on the shore, as these are blooms with live and dead algae with the possibility that toxins may be released.
It is also recommended not to drink water from any river or lake course; avoid swallowing water; in case of remaining algal blooms on clothing or the body, rinse with clean water; in the presence of cyanobacteria, avoid submerging mucous membranes (eyes, nose) and rinse afterwards.
With these actions, the Municipality reaffirms its commitment to environmental care and the protection of the community's health, promoting the safe and responsible use of natural recreational spaces.
