Governor Rogelio Frigerio, accompanied by Mayor Francisco Azcué, inaugurated the expansion and modernization works of the Comodoro Pierrestegui airport in Concordia. This infrastructure milestone required an investment of over 40 million dollars, financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). "Concordia and the Salto Grande region need real progress and fundamental changes. Today, I have no doubt, Concordia and the region are starting to take off," the governor stated.
The project aimed to strengthen the region's economic productivity, improve its tourism positioning, and recondition the facilities to receive larger aircraft. With these improvements, Concordia will consolidate itself as a regional connectivity hub, boosting the arrival of national and international tourists and promoting the development of new businesses.
The governor defined the inauguration as "a great step, also for Concordia to stop being known for poverty and be admired for the enormous potential it has," and specified that "we followed the work very closely so that deadlines were met and it was ready as soon as possible."
"We did not come to make announcements that are forgotten from one day to the next. We came to act, that is the commitment we have. We came to demonstrate that it is possible to govern with concrete facts and works that remain forever and truly change people's lives," he asserted before considering that "the true power of politics was never in speeches, it is in the transformations that really remain. And this work is one of those transformations that are made to make history."
He insisted that they are "promoting private development in the province and especially in this Salto Grande region. The first step is to carry out the works that SMEs, producers, and tourism need. This airport is the best proof that we are on that path," he remarked.
However, Frigerio maintained that "we always want to take one more step, we always demand more of ourselves," and announced: "We are promoting a strategic connectivity study that allows us to take advantage of transport opportunities for the entire region. We are going to advance in the study for the creation of a barge port and a logistics activity zone here in Concordia that includes the industrial park and the city's river port."
In addition, he announced that "with the sister Republic of Uruguay, we are going to design binational tourism circuits that attract visitors from different parts of the world and we are working on the Salto Grande Multisectoral Fund to finance the producing and service-providing companies that operate in the region," he added.
In that framework, he said that "Concordia and the Salto Grande region do not need politicians who promise things, they need real progress and fundamental changes like the one the mayor is making in the city and works like this airport. Today, I have no doubt, Concordia and the region are starting to take off."
Finally, and by way of closing, the governor asserted: "We are going to defend this change and this course so as not to throw away the effort we are making, because no one moves backwards, the future is ahead, we just have to work together to make it a reality," he concluded.
VISION FOR DEVELOPMENT AND REGIONAL INTEGRATION
Mayor Azcué valued the governor's efforts to complete the works, remarking that "he had a dream, a vision when he began to manage the loan from the IDB many years ago when he was a national government official."
He also highlighted the importance of the work, stressing that the airport "is a fundamental tool for integration, connectivity, and development. This work does not belong only to Concordia, but belongs to the region," he affirmed. Azcué highlighted that, a few hours after its authorization, the runway had already facilitated the arrival of medical professionals for organ harvesting and donation procedures that allowed lives to be saved.
PRIDE
For her part, the IDB representative in Argentina, Viviana del Carmen Alva Hart, congratulated the province on its management capacity. "What you have demonstrated is how provincial management can carry out challenges such as complex infrastructure like this one. The IDB is proud to have accompanied Entre Ríos and reiterates its commitment to continue working for sustained growth," she expressed.
THE WORK
The work included the expansion of the runway from 1,600 to 2,000 meters, the construction of a new passenger terminal of almost 2,000 m², a control tower, an office building for airport agencies, and specific spaces for the Airport Security Police and the Rescue and Fire Control Service. Service and technology areas were also incorporated, such as a new lighting and beacon system, parking, technical rooms, fuel plant, meteorological field, and improvements in supply and effluent treatment networks.
The first commercial flight is scheduled for October 21, with the Aeroparque (Buenos Aires) - Concordia route, operated by the company Humming Airways. The estimated travel time will be 40 to 45 minutes, with two weekly frequencies, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
In this way, Entre Ríos reinforces its strategic infrastructure to boost production, tourism, and regional integration.
Present at the event were Vice Governor Alicia Aluani, provincial ministers, officials from the Municipality of Concordia, national and provincial legislators, councilors, mayors from the region, and airport authorities.
