The mayor Enrique Cresto sent a draft ordinance to the Deliberative Council for the creation of the Citizen Council for Monitoring and Control of Public Works. The body will be composed of representatives of construction professionals and representatives of the opposition. Its purpose will be to carry out oversight and prevent acts of corruption in public works carried out in the city.
"The active participation of the sector's representative institutions in the oversight of public works carried out with municipal, provincial, national, or international funds strengthens the State-Company-Citizen relationship and contributes to the prevention of corruption, making public management transparent," the mayor considered when referring to the project that will be debated by the councilors. "This is a great challenge," he said, and announced that it stipulates convening the Association of Architects, the Association of Engineers, the UTN, the Master Builders, and councilors from all political parties, "so that they can monitor and verify that what is paid for is reflected in the materials and the completion of the work."
In this regard, the mayor referred to the recent statements of "a well-known businessman in the construction field, who said that overpricing in public works is something normal, installed in the market." Given this, Cresto maintained that "every work that is overpaid or not properly controlled causes great damage to society, to everyone, to those who pay municipal taxes and expect us to provide the best services and carry out the works as they should be." Therefore, he reiterated, the Citizen Council for Monitoring and Control of Public Works will be "one more tool for the fight against corruption, not only of the leader or the official, but also of the private sector, because corruption exists when there are two parties, one in the state sphere and one in the private sphere."
