During this year, everyone, and especially older adults and/or those with risk factors, have made significant efforts by taking preventive measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Even so, 83% of deaths occur in people over 60 years of age and 85% of confirmed cases occur in people under 60 years of age. There is still community transmission of the virus in most jurisdictions of the country, although the number of cases is decreasing. Taking this into account, it will be essential to minimize the risks that increased social contact may entail, particularly with people who belong to more vulnerable populations.
In-person gatherings during the Christmas and New Year holidays, where families and friends meet, including people coming from other locations/provinces, involve different levels of risk.
The epidemiological situation allows us to consider gathering for the holidays, but the risk of transmission still exists. It is essential to take care of people with risk factors and those over 60 years of age, because we still do not have an effective treatment. Gatherings must take place within a framework of responsibility, care, and with limited numbers of people.
For these reasons, it is of the utmost importance to take the necessary precautions to minimize the risk of the spread of COVID-19 in family gatherings that will take place during the upcoming holiday periods. It is recommended:
- That gatherings be held outdoors, in patios, terraces, sidewalks, and always ensuring that the pertinent physical distancing is complied with to minimize contact between attendees.
- If it is not possible to be outdoors, open doors and windows to ensure good ventilation.
- As much as possible, maintain the minimum distance required between people, especially with people with risk factors or those over 60 years of age.
- Limit the number of people at each gathering as much as possible.
- It is preferable that gatherings be with cohabitants, or the usual contact group (bubble); in the event that there is any member other than the usual contacts, limit the number of people/groups to the minimum possible.
- In the distribution of people at the table, dinner, or toast, it is recommended that those who are cohabitants, or usual contacts, be placed together and not mixed with other groups.
- Do not share glasses, cutlery, or utensils. Do not drink from the same bottle or can.
- At all times, comply with distancing measures, the use of a face mask, and hand hygiene.
- If any person has symptoms or a diagnosis of COVID-19, or is a contact of a confirmed case, they must remain in isolation and therefore not participate in social gatherings or leave their home, except to seek medical attention.
